December 1, 2014. Portraits. Solo performance at Tacit or Loud2014/12/01

Inter Arts Center, Bergsgatan 29, Malmö. 18:00-20:00.
There is a code for the main door and elevator leading up to the Inter Arts Center. The code is 2811.
The performance will be in the White Room on the 3rd floor.

Portraits. A solo performance by Jakob Riis for one loudspeaker, aluminium foil, computer and electronics.

In a white gallery space you see a man working with a set up of one loudspeaker, a laptop, various electronic devices and a generous supply of aluminium foil. After mounting a piece of aluminium foil on the loudspeaker, the man turns over to his setup of a laptop computer, a small mixingboard and other electronic devices and starts to make sounds. At first you hear small movements of the alufoil creating subtle noises, the alufoil set in movement by the air moved by the membrane of the loudspeaker. Now a musical crescendo of significant duration takes place. The music are gradually turning into more noisy and louder sounds. At the end of the crescendo small bits and pieces of the alufoil are spit out from the points of the two bass reflex holes in the front of the cabinet. A portrait starts to embody... The music stops. The man removes the alufoil off the loudspeaker and hang it on the gallery walls. A portrait… This action is repeated continuously for two hours, resulting in about 20 - 25 portraits filling the space over time. The audience is free to enter, move around the space and leave during the time of the performance.

New album out november 11, 2014: Lotte Anker & Jakob Riis: Squid Police2014/11/11

Squid Police (kor006), will be released on the Malmö-based label Konvoj Records november 11, 2014.

Lotte Anker (DK): saxophones
Jakob Riis (SE/DK): laptop, feedback and processing

The music on Squid Police explores a territory of slow movements and transformations of space, material, light and texture - not unlike what you might associate with an underwater experience.

Squid Police is a futher development of a previous project entitled Motion Picture (2008): an art animation by visual artist Malene Bach with sound/music by Jakob Riis and Lotte Anker.

Lotte Anker and Jakob Riis have worked together in numerous different constellations through the years. This is their first release as a duo.

"...This is one of the best albums of the year..." Stef, Free Jazz Blog

"Det glömda modersmålet". Nordisk Salong, Dunkers kulturhus, Helsingborg, Sweden 2014/10/24

Test hanging in Elisabeth Moritz atelie - click image for more photos
"Det glömda modersmålet" ("The Forgotten Mother Tounge") is an soundinstallation by Elisabeth Moritz. The installation includes a new composition by Jakob Riis, commisioned by - and based on the ideas of Elisabeth Moritz.

The installation "Det glömda modersmålet" was chosen by a jury to be included in the exhibition "Nordisk Salong 2014" at Dunkers kulturhus in Helsingborg, Sweden. The opening will be on friday, october 24th 18:00-20:00, and the exhibition will be open from 25 october 2014 - 15 january 2015.

All sounds in this work are generated from a recording of E. Moritz mother reading the text "Die Vergangenheit als Gegenwart" by Martin Walser, where the melodic and harmonic structure of the lullaby "Wiegenlied" by Franz Schubert are shining through, and creating a framework for choosing sinusoidal tracks to follow in a re-synthesis of sounds generated from the recording. The composition is presented in an 8 channel soundsystem with specially designed loudspeakers.

Thanks to JC Morrison for invaluable input on the loudspeaker construction.

The Cessation Elegy - New release on Lava Thief Records, out on april 7th 20142014/4/7

The Cessation Elegy
A collaboration between Bill Horist and Jakob Riis.

1. Wind, Tar to Baliene Flame
2. The Hidden Terms of Cessation's Elegy
3. Fibrillate - Wishes of the Last Twitch
4. A Rakish Gasp.
5. Who Mourns the Talus Dead?
6. Engines of Exposures Unborn;
7. A Certainty Drowned in the Channels of Memory.

Seattle based guitarist Bill Horist and Jakob Riis embarked together on a short tour of the Northwest US in the Summer of 2009.

Although they had known each other for years (having first met at a festival in San Diego and soon after, performed together in a larger ad hoc group in Tijuana, Mexico) they had never before worked together as a duo.

The plan was simple; each would do a solo set and then they would perform as a duo, wherein Jakob would process, manipulate and extrapolate Bill’s prepared guitar work.

It seemed like a good strategy, but neither expected such a synergistic result and ‘The Cessation Elegy’ is the culmination of this brief encounter. It explores broad sonic boundaries, finding footholds in a wide array of sounds - drone, raag-infused acoustic exploration, straight up noise, abstract folk, doom, electro-acoustic excursions and dolorous ambience.

Limited edition of 100 copies only on CD; the packaging is handmade, with gold ink screen printed onto black card.

"This is an extraordinary piece of work, a wordless communion in caustic colours and sterling guitar playing... An introspective vibe suddenly flung WIDE OPEN, as it grabs your attention in meaty dives of DOOM, tremors that tonally rot way in bouldering grains... where divisions between each become deliciously blurred and unfold beyond the sum of their parts. A synergy of open thresholds that make for plenty of replays." - . Michael Rodham-Heaps, Freq magazine

"Don’t let the classic 78 rpm-style artwork fool you. Michigan’s Horist (Master Musicians of Bukake) and Danish sonic innovator Riis serve up a thoroughly avant-garde collection of pastoral guitar and fiendishly dark ambience sure to stimulate the senses and have you fingering your ear on occasions as if to unblock the static. Add a collection of song titles that hint heavily at Jungian spiritual imagery and what we have here (hear?) is something rather quite strange but also strangely appealing" - Ian Fraser, Terrascope

“An occasionally unsettling mix of wordless, solo acoustic guitar melded with dense, industrial hum and mysterious Bladerunner acoustics…” - Captain Fidanza, Collective Zine

“Warm guitar works alternate with manipulated tone works, and the result is a diverse album that plays to the strength of each… the beauty has been in the danger.” – Richard Allen, A Closer Listen

Transformatoren - premiere March 13, 2014 at CaféTeatret, Copenhagen2014/3/13

Instruktion - Nielsen & Petra Berg Holbek
Scenografi - Palle Steen Christensen & Ingvild Rømo Grande
Lysdesign, Videoteknik - Morten Kolbak
Lyd og musikproduktion - Mads Emil Nielsen & Jakob Riis
